One of the most important reasons to conduct a Dutch Auction is to prevent gas wars and to divert ETH amount from miners to artists and charities.
If you look at the historical data for Art Blocks, you can see what people were paying for mints in all three sections of our platform. This "final price" was consistently 2x to 5x the price set by the artist. This means, anything over the asking price was going to miners.
If collectors find the artwork desirable enough to purchase it above the artist’s intended price, the artist is actually rewarded with significantly more revenue that would otherwise go to miners.
A lot of artists have selected charitiest to donate to, so those charities will also benefit significantly from the funds that were previously being funneled to miners.
In May 2022, Art Blocks began giving the artist the option of a Linear Dutch Auction, or an Exponential Dutch Auction. With Linear, artists specify the starting price, starting time, ending time, and ending price, and the price will linearly decrease over that time for each block. For Exponential Dutch Auctions, the artist decides the half life for each price drop. For example, let's say that an exponential dutch auction was starting at 1.5 ETH and lowering to 0.1 over 30 minutes , then the half life would be about 8 minutes. So over the course of every 8 minutes the price would gradually cut in half. After the initial 8 minutes, the DA would go from 1.5 to 0.75. And then the next 8 minutes 0.75 to 0.375, and so on.
For both Linear Dutch auctions and Exponential Dutch auctions, the price will gradually decrease with each block, and they are fully automated.
